Do you want to learn martial arts? Have you tried to learn by reading martial arts books? If you have, then I bet it didn’t work out very well. The problem is not that you can learn about martial arts. You can learn the history, the names, the dates and even the styles. The problem is when it comes to form you need an instructor.

When you learn from books, you can form bad habits. Martial arts instructors prevent you from settling into bad form. They make learning martial arts more fluid and much more powerful.

Studying the books can help you make an informed decision in which style you want to learn. They are very helpful in showing the differences in the martial arts like Judo or Taekwondo. It will help you decide which one is right for you.

Next to not having an instructor, the biggest problem is not having an adequate sparring partner. Learning any martial art requires practice, and a partner gives you confidence in your abilities. When you practice alone at home, you have no moving target. It is like practicing in a vacuum. Nothing replaces practicing with a live partner.

The best part of attending classes is the motivation factor. Books and tapes just don’t offer the same motivation as highly motivated people. The energy you receive just from walking into a classroom is indescribable. You will experience a higher level of success just from being around other people.

If you just can’t get to a class because distance is a problem, then your books are an option but should be considered a last resort. As I stated earlier, a highly qualified instructor is really needed to properly train in any martial arts. There are just some things you can’t learn from a book. However, if a book is the only thing you’ve got, then by all means learn what you can from it. Focus on proper technique and do your best.

Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is a combination of karate, grappling, wrestling, Tang Soo Do, boxing, jujitsu, Tae Kwon Do and more all combined in one. Mixed martial arts, in its modern form, emerged in 1993 through the Ultimate Fighting Championships and was based on pitting different fighting styles against each other with minimal rules to determine which system would be better in a real, unregulated combat situation.
During the late 1990s, the governing bodies imposed extra rules for the safety of the athletes and to try to promote the sport and gain wider acceptance, but still maintaining the no holds barred idea. MMA has grown rapidly in the last few years with many people both young and old realizing the many benefits of mixed martial arts both physical and mental and this has seen enrollments in classes increasing worldwide.
MMA is classed as a combat sport, but it’s a sport that stresses the ideals of fair play and respect for your opponent still. However, MMA are still quite often wrongly known as vicious and brutal.
Regardless of MMA’s reputation, the competition is relatively safe. Due to the rules and regulations imposed and strictly enforced and the tough mental and physical conditioning of the opponents there has never been a death or indeed a critical injury report by the MMA as directly linked to any tournament.
Martial arts are great for the body. Regular training strengthens and tones the muscles and adds flexibility. Training in martial arts gives you a full cardio work out. You can expect to greatly increase your strength and stamina and improve your hand eye coordination. Martial arts is a good weight loss program as well because it becomes a complete system in which a healthy diet is part and when combined with the extreme physical activity proper weight loss is assured.
Classes are run at schools, dojos, youth groups organizations, church groups, and other, less formal settings. MMA is also being incorporated into many gyms as mixed martial arts become more popular.
A typical class will have you start with a warm up consisting of various stretching exercises, trunk rotations, jumps, squats and abs tightening exercises. Then there will be a series of movements taught and explained in full. Sparring is controlled and protective gear is worn, such as helmets, gloves and guards.
At other times a bag will be used for practicing kicks, jabs and punches. Although you may feel awkward and unfit at first, it will not take long before your fitness and skill level improves, along with your frame of mind.
People who practice MMA feel and look healthier, but there are far more benefits than the physical side. While many think of martial arts as violent, in the mainstream it is used as self defense. It does not encourage violence but teaches the student how to control anger and how to use self control and restraint.
Students are taught self discipline and the rigors of training builds character and self-confidence, which ultimately reduces temper induced rages that can often be the cause of many street fights. This confidence carries over into everyday life and as a result mixed martial arts students tend to be become better people than they were.
Mixed martial arts training teaches you that you must control the powers that you have had the privilege of learning and never use it recklessly or without thought. Students are also taught that before any success is achieved they will fail many times and that practiced and perseverance is the key. This is a valuable lesson to learn and will often carry over into other endeavors the student undertakes.
Furthermore, the training teaches you that every person is responsible for his own actions and must understand and abide by the given rules. This kind of training improves one’s actions in life as well as in martial arts training and tournaments. Many of these arts build a spiritual life into the training, with courtesy, self-control, perseverance and integrity emphasized in the classes. So much so that many Christian Church groups are running mixed martial arts classes for their youth organizations due to the character building characteristics in martial arts training that are also much a part of Christian beliefs.
Given all this, it is no wonder that so many parents are enrolling their children in mixed martial arts classes today. They see their children’s health and fitness improve, something their child’s peers often lack. And they also witness their children’s mindset, attitudes to life and self-improvement, respect and courage all improve as well.
Anyone who trains in karate, jujitsu, Tae Kwon Do or any of the arts will gain these benefits. If you have any desire to improve your body and mind at the same time with only one activity, then martial arts is something you ought to seriously consider. You don’t just get in shape physically, but also mentally and spiritually. No gym workout can compare. All across the world, adults are joining dojos and thoroughly enjoying the many benefits of mixed martial arts.

Muay Thai, the national sport of Thailand, is known in the Western fighting world as one of the “sprawl-and-brawl” disciplines of martial arts, focusing on striking the opponent more than grappling, clinching, or submission holds. Drenched in a long history as a royal art form of many traditions, this martial art also greatly accentuates the goals of conditioning and fitness in a fighter. Using Muay Thai techniques can greatly improve stamina for MMA fighters that practice in any area of martial arts.

Thai Pads: Training with Thai pads is a staple to any Muay Thai conditioning schedule. Proper work with these pads will help improve speed, power, timing, and conditioning. The key to getting a good workout is having a good trainer or training partner who knows how to hold the pads. Switching between the large foam pads and focus mitts help vary the workout between power and strength to speed and precision.

Shins: Shin conditioning is very specific to Muay Thai training. It is recommended to condition the shins by kicking a Thai pad or heavy bag for at least 100 times per day, but preferably closer to 500, depending on how vigorous of an exercise youre looking for. Kick lightly at first to warm up, and then start kicking at full strength around the 30th kick. If your shins become sore, rest and massage them to avoid injury. A useful trick is to place your shin in between your middle knuckles and rub along the length of your shin several times to restore blood flow.

Mental Training: Muay Thai fighters believe that mental toughness is just as important in the ring as physical condition or skills. Meditation and praying are staples of Buddhism and Thai culture, so it should come as no surprise that this transfers over to Muay Thai boxing. This mental training concerns both visualization and positive thinking. While not physically training, a Muay Thai boxer is constantly visualizing their fighting moves in their head like a movie. This will help with reflexes and natural reactions because youre practicing scenarios in your head all day and night. Positive thinking involves eating, breathing, and sleeping success and winning 24 hours a day. Negative thoughts must be neutralized by positive ones and a champions mindset put in place.

Muay Thai fighting is a very popular sport worldwide and has infinite room for advancement of skills. Learning the fighting techniques, conditioning drills, and traditional formalities can all help in any area of martial arts. So next time youre training at the gym, dont forget your Thai Pads, shin exercises, and to mentally train as well. Happy training!

With martial arts self defense videos you always have a fair idea what to expect. You will usually have an instructor who claims to be some expert who teaches you basic moves and stances. You follow these tips rigidly and feel confident because you believe that you are learning the keys to great self defense. In actual fact, these videos and classes only scratch the surface of what is needed to be in control when under duress. While it is very important to know all the moves, it is equally vital to know how to avoid trouble. While it is fantastic to have all of these martial arts moves in your locker, the best way to stay safe is to avoid trouble altogether.

The only thing more annoying than a thug is someone who is cocky because they learned a few defensive maneuvers. The phrase self defense’ seems to slip their mind as they go forth into the big bad world looking for people to beat up. You may see these small, skinny tough guys in a bar near you and can always spot them by their scowl and aggressive demeanor. They end up picking a fight with the wrong guy who just happens to have proper martial arts moves of his own. The tough guy finds that self defense doesn’t work so well when you’re the aggressor and his opponent wipes the floor with mister tough guy.

Genuinely useful martial arts training will consist of teaching you how to walk away from trouble or avoid it altogether. Clearly, looking for a fight is not the way to go about this nor is walking home through dark shortcuts at night. Fear should not dictate where you walk and at what time but some common sense will greatly reduce your chances of being a victim. If you are forced to walk alone at night, do so with your head high and a confident stride, always taking care to look around for potential trouble.

If danger still manages to find you in the form of an aggressive thug, it is still possible to avoid a physical altercation. If they do not attack you immediately then that means you are seen as something of a threat. They may talk tough to you to see how you react. If you show any signs of fear or weakness they are likely to strike but standing tall and holding your ground shows them that you mean business. While you don’t need to announce that you know martial arts moves, having the gait of someone that does will probably cause your would-be attacker to continue on their way.

Martial arts self defense training should show you that it is not always about who is the toughest guy in the room. Rather, the smartest guy in the room is the one who will come out on top. If the time comes where you have to unleash your martial arts moves then so be it, but avoid giving and receiving blows if at all possible.

To your shock, your baby has asked to take mixed martial arts for kids. They want to be like their hero B.J. Penn or Chuck Liddell. Broken bones, bloody noses, and choke holds go racing through your mind. Your first thought is, NO! I don’t want my baby to get hurt, but then you realize it may be more than “fighting, so you promise to look.

Safety:
When looking at schools, check out the safety equipment. It should be in good shape and well cared for. Watch a class to see how well the students are monitored. In martial arts, as in any other sport, kids can get hurt; and, precautions should be taken to prevent injury. Protective equipment needs to be mandatory when sparring. If a place will let your child spar without safety equipment, pack your child up and leave quickly. Safety should be of utmost importance.

Parental Viewing:
All martial arts classes should allow parental viewing of the class. I feel for instructors who don’t want to deal with interfering and overprotective parents, but any class which won’t allow me to watch makes me nervous. You need to be comfortable with your child’s safety before you ever miss a class.

Benefits:
Martial arts provides more than friendship and activity for your child. Although physical activity is so important for our children who watch way too much TV, the martial arts teaches inner strength and confidence as well. It teaches children how to avoid fights but at the same time defend themselves when necessary.

Overall, martial arts classes can be a great experience for your kid. With proper training and safety equipment, it is no more dangerous than other contact sports. Like other sports, martial arts will build physical strength, stamina and confidence. Before you say no, look into some classes in your area and talk to parents of the kids enrolled. You just might like what you see.

what you just learned about Martial Arts for Kids is just the begining.

You shouldnt be surprised that there are so many martial arts weapons that have been developed through the centuries. Since many martial arts have been around since ancient times, martial arts weapons are bound to have evolved too over time.

Take the knife for example practically all martial arts will teach their students how to use knives as martial arts weapons because almost all cultures have developed and used some version of the knife. The Philippines has the balisong, also called a Butterfly knife, which folds into its handle when not being used. The tanto is a Japanese stabbing knife that was usually carried by Japanese women within their obi as their self-defense weapon. There is also the kris that was used in Southeast Asian countries such as Indonesia, the Philippines and Malaysia during more violent times.

Since many times commoners were forbidden to carry bladed martial arts weapons, proficiency in use of wooden sticks as martial arts weapons also grew. The Japanese have the long wooden staff called Jo, whose use is taught in the martial arts of aikido and which is still used in modern times by Japanese police. The term escrima has been applied to stick-fighting as done in the Philippines it is said by some that an escrima (or arnis) master can use even a simple ballpen as a martial arts weapon in stick-fighting and come out the winner. Use of sticks (both long and short) as martial arts weapons allowed ordinary folk to protect their villages when invaders came to plunder their community even in the absence of bladed martial arts weapons.

Less commonly-known among martial arts weapons is the guang dao, which is a pole that has a blade with a spiked end. A tassel or red sash might be tied to where the blade meets the pole. Nowadays, the guang dao is one of the martial arts weapons used in the sport of wushu. But unlike other martial arts weapons that you can use to attack your opponent, the guang dao is used more to disarm an attacker and render him helpless. The benefit of such long martial arts weapons is that you can enter combat and keep your opponent at a safe distance from you.

It is not often you find martial arts weapons designed chiefly for women, but there is actually one and it is found in Japan. It is called the Naginata and it is a Japanese pole weapon whose use was reserved for samurai women. Some say the Naginata looks a lot like the Chinese guang dao. Modern female Naginata users may have been inspired to take up martial arts weapons like this one because of the famed Naginata user Itagaki who led an entire garrison in the 12th century. Samurai women were expected in the past to use their Naginata to defend their families if invaders came while their husbands were away.

There are so many martial arts weapons being used nowadays that it is hard to condense their uses to just one article. However, it is advisable for fans of martial arts weapons to take up just one weapon at a time to become proficient before trying to use others. This gives you focus and a sense of accomplishment when you master at least one of the many martial arts weapons available today.

You have listened to all the great advice out there for staying safe. You are vigilant and aware when you are out. You don’t venture into areas that you know to be unsafe. When you are travelling you do your research so you know what areas to avoid in a strange place.

Yet, you still feel like you may need to get better at defending yourself should the need arise. So which way do you go. Even though it is not the only method of self defense out there, people tend to think of martial arts self defense as the primary means of protecting oneself from harm. And certainly, learning martial arts techniques can’t hurt.

But, there are a few things you need to consider before you embark on any kind of martial arts self defense regimen. All programs are not the same. They vary based on an individual’s age, their fitness level and even their competitiveness. Not just anyone can learn martial arts techniques.

Like most things today, the best place to do research on self defense is the internet. Once you gain a basic understanding of the many martial arts programs out there, star formulating some goals as to what you want to accomplish. Do you just want to be able to learn the basics so you can break free from a mugger? Or do you want to become accomplished. Are you looking just to improve your physical fitness and confidence or would you like to perhaps enter competitions one day?

Once you have an idea of what you want then you can start asking intelligent question of local martial arts professionals. A good studio will give you some kind of fitness test to see what level of martial arts self defense you should begin with. There is no sense in even trying to learn basic martial arts techniques if you lack the strength, flexibility or cardiovascular health needed.

But if you are say ,older and a little out of shape, does this mean that you will never be able to defend yourself. Certainly not. There are excellent programs that teach the basic minimum moves of martial arts self defense to people of all ages and fitness levels. Now that doesn’t mean that you will able to fight like Bruce Lee when you are done. But you will be able to temporarily disable an attacker using martial arts techniques.

And when all is said and done, this is the main reason so many people turn to martial arts techniques when it comes to defending themselves. Using the principles of leverage and balance, someone of any age, gender or physical ability can be taught the proper moves to get out of an unforeseen confrontation for as much time as it takes to get away.

What I have found in my experience is that when even the most novice student starts to learn the basics of martial arts self defense, they become more sure of themselves and decide to stay with the program to improve their fitness, meet folks just like them, and have some fun.
